Standout Washington wines offer good value

WE'RE MOVING into the fall season of new wine releases, and open houses abound. Harvest and crush are in full swing, and wineries are humming with activity but almost always happy to receive visitors. If you are eager for some hands-on experience, it's a good time to call and see if volunteers are needed for sorting grapes or other chores.

If nothing else, it's a perfect opportunity to break out of old habits and try new wines, and new wineries, with the goal of brightening up holiday tables.

EFESTE Evergreen Riesling ($16). Excellent concentration and bracing minerality, with a mix of green berry and apple flavors. A subtle wine with a dry, complex finish.

Seattle Metropolitan's article on Brennon Leighton


"The Natural Brennon Leighton patiently coaxes fine wines from fruit, but he has no time for snobby jargon."

Leighton thinks of his own creations as people. The grassy 2006 Feral sauvignon blanc he likens to a woman in her 20s. "When she walks down the street she wouldn't turn heads, but if someone stared at her they would say, 'Oh my God, she's really gorgeous.'" The similarly subtle Big Papa cabernet sauvignon, meanwhile, is rambunctious and “has a certain power," says Leighton, "and he's smart. But his intelligence isn't always apparent until you sit back and get to know him."
