A Look Back at 2018 Syrah

As January finally comes to an end, we’re saying goodbye to Library month with one last library tasting this weekend of our 2018 1.5L magnum Syrahs. We don’t make magnums every year, so these are a rarity we’re especially excited to be sharing with you all!

Our Syrah Program

Syrah has always been a huge part of our wine program here at EFESTĒ. Throughout the years we’ve sourced our Syrah grapes from a number of different vineyard sites throughout the Red Mountain, Yakima Valley AVAs, and using our native fermentation and minimal intervention approach really allows the unique terroirs of each one to shine. These days, we source most of our Syrah from our own Estate vineyards, Angela’s Vineyard and Taylor Mag Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA, and Oldfield Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA.

Magnums are the perfect amount of wine for celebrations like dinner parties or special occasions, and larger formats are particularly interesting when it comes to aging. Since there’s more space, this slows down the aging process, keeping the wine fresher and allowing them to be more complex as they age. Here’s a look at the four Syrahs we’ll be pouring this weekend.

2018 Emmy

Emmy is one of our retired wines, but back in 2018 it was 100% Syrah, sourced from the Ciel Du Cheval vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA.
2018 Emmy Syrah

The wine is dense and hedonistic yet has a fantastic sense of acidity, as the weight doesn’t overwhelm. Layers of bittersweet chocolate and kirsch collide with minerals, smoked meats and blackberry pie. This finishes long which makes this every bit gratifying.

2018 Eléni

Named for Helen Ferrelli’s Greek name meaning “light”, Eléni is 100% Red Willow Syrah from the Yakima Valley AVA.

Wonderful blueberry cordial and mocha tones mingle with smoky minerals on the nose. The palate is dense and highly gratifying. Layers of rich dark fruits collide with minerals, smoked brisket, blueberry pie and dark chocolate shavings. The long finish provides the perfect crescendo

2018 Ceidleigh

Our Ceidleigh Syrah is made entirely from Red Mountain grapes. Old and new world in a glass is what makes the Ceidleigh a distinctive wine deserving of its name, which means “celebration” in Gaelic.
2018 Ceidleigh Syrah

The 2018 ‘Ceidleigh’ Syrah is a dense, gratifying and hedonistic effort by superstar winemaker Mark Fiore. Smoky tones mingle with blackberry compote and black licorice with sagebrush undertones on this intoxicating nose. The palate is fresh and balanced, yet very gratifying. The mouth-watering acidity really adds to the enjoyment as layers of dark currants, blackberry cordial, coffee grounds and underbrush flavors come together with the great sense of acidity.

2018 Jolie Bouche

“Jolie Bouche” translates from French to “pretty mouth”—named for its smooth mouthfeel. Although now sourced from our Oldfield Estate Vineyard in Yakima Valley, the 2018 vintage was made entirely from grapes out of Bouchey Vineyard.

Bright, dark ruby. Cool, sexy scents of blackberry, dark raspberry, cocoa powder and minerals. Pliant, rich and savory but not at all over the top, with black raspberry, spice and faint herb flavors firmed by underlying minerality. Not a sweet style but quite intense, this wine relies more on its serious dusty tannins than on its acidity for structure and potential longevity.
