At EFESTĒ, we are proud of our 100% Malbec, a wine that not only showcases the unique terroir of the Wahluke Slope AVA, but also embodies our commitment to minimal intervention winemaking and quality craftmanship. From its early beginnings to its current and ever evolving complexity, our Malbec is a reflection of the land and the careful techniques we employ in all our wines.
The Winemaking Process
Our journey with Malbec started at the newly established James Vineyard when the vines were in their third leaf; just beginning to produce fruit. It’s been an exciting journey of perfecting this varietal, with our focus on minimal intervention to allow the terroir to truly shine. Like all our wines, we natively ferment with wild yeast to preserve the distinctive characteristics of the land and highlight the subtle differences of the varietal in each vintage. During fermentation in stainless steel, we use extended maceration—allowing the juice to stay in contact with its seeds and skins for 35 days. This step is crucial for extracting the full-bodied intensity and deep colors and flavors that are the hallmarks of a great Malbec.
After fermentation, we move the wine through a secondary malolactic fermentation for enhanced stability and complexity. Then, the wine is stored in 60% new French oak barrels for 22 months. This not only adds depth from the oak influence, but also contributes to the wine’s aging potential, ensuring that the Malbec will continue to evolve beautifully over time.
The Vineyard
James Vineyard is located in the Wahluke Slope AVA, a region known for its ideal conditions for grape growing, thanks to its proximity to the Columbia River and the Saddle Mountains. The region’s dry, arid climate, combined with strong summer winds, creates a unique environment that results in bold, concentrated fruit. With the second-longest growing season in Washington State, just behind Red Mountain, the Wahluke Slope AVA is perfect for Malbec, which requires a longer season to build its intense and robust profile.
Tasting Notes
Our Malbec continues to develop with each vintage, and the 2021 is no exception. On the nose, you’ll find aromas of dark red fruits, leading to a rich and jammy mouthfeel. The finish is long and spicy, creating a wine that’s both luxurious and mouthwatering. It’s the kind of wine that makes you crave the perfect food pairing—so be sure to have your favorite grilled meats on hand!
Pairing Suggestions
Malbec is a versatile partner for a range of hearty dishes. Here are a few ideas to complement its bold flavors:
- Grilled steak or barbequed ribs
- Braised lamb with rosemary and roasted potatoes
- A rich beef stew
- Charcuterie board with aged cheeses and cured meats
Reviews and Accolades

- Owen Bargreen: “The ‘James Vineyard’ is located in the Wahluke Slope AVA. Stored in 50% new French oak, this delivers black rose petals and blueberry compote on the nose alongside anise and exotic spices. The palate is soft and lively with bright underlying freshness and loads of mouth-watering acidity. A beautiful core of blue and black fruits greets you on the palate, with good length.
