At EFESTĒ, many of our wines are steeped in family history and storytelling, and Knight Commander is no exception. This wine is named in honor of Big Papa Daniel Ferrelli, who earned the title of “Knight Commander” as the highest-ranking altar boy in his congregation. He wore this title with pride—until a notorious incident involving a sneak taste of the sacramental wine led to his removal. These stories, which have shaped our winemaking journey since our garage wine days, continue to be shared with warmth and laughter around dinner tables, among both old friends and new. Though his mischievous wine-stealing days are long gone, our Knight Commander Syrah serves as a reminder of this family lore, offering a chance to celebrate—and sometimes poke fun at—the stories and characters that define us.
A Wine Story
The idea for Knight Commander Syrah came during a barrel visit to Guigal Winery in Northern Rhône, where the winemaking style left a lasting impression on our winemaker. With a desire to bring that complexity and structure to Washington, we began crafting Knight Commander, a blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier, sourced from the renowned Ciel du Cheval Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA.
The Vineyard
Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, established in the mid-1970s in the Red Mountain AVA, is one of Washington’s most prestigious vineyards. Renowned for its unique soil rich in calcium carbonate and high pH, it contributes to the deep minerality and boldness of its grapes. Spanning 80 acres, the vineyard produces top-tier varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Syrah. Its exceptional terroir, along with meticulous cultivation practices, creates optimal growing conditions that allow the fruit to ripen fully. This results in wines with remarkable depth and complexity, including the signature earthiness and vibrant character of Knight Commander Syrah, solidifying Ciel du Cheval as a cornerstone of Washington’s wine industry.
The Winemaking Process
Our winemaking approach to Knight Commander Syrah mirrors the techniques observed in Northern Rhône. Syrah and Viognier grapes are co-fermented, allowing the two varietals to combine early in the process, adding structure and an aromatic lift to the resulting wine. Native fermentation and extended maceration helps to develop the tannins and leads to a wine that has remarkable texture and mouthfeel. Knight Commander spends 30 months aging in 60% new French oak and 40% used French oak barrels, which helps to round out the tannins and enhances its spicy and bold flavors.
Tasting Notes
This full-bodied Syrah showcases vibrant acidity and complex layers of dark fruit, black pepper, and earthy nuances. The addition of Viognier introduces delicate floral aromas, perfectly balancing the bold flavors with a graceful lift. On the palate, the wine delivers an impressive mouthfeel, supported by long, spicy tannins that suggest excellent aging potential. The extended barrel aging enhances its vibrancy and texture, resulting in a well-rounded wine. Sourced from Red Mountain, the grapes impart a boldness and earthiness that enrich the mid-palate experience.
Food Pairings
Knight Commander Syrah pairs well with rich, savory dishes. Try it with Yiayia’s Braised Short Ribs, a family-favorite meal that fills your home with mouth-watering aromas, and a staple in our EFESTĒ community. For something a little different, try a creamy mushroom risotto—The dish’s richness complements the wine’s vibrant acidity, while the earthy mushrooms enhance its bold character. The creamy texture harmonizes with the spicy tannins, creating a delightful balance that elevates both the wine and the meal.
Reviews and Accolades
Knight Commander Syrah has received high scores year over year. Some recent accolades include:
- 2021 – Owen Bargreen: “The 2021 ‘Knight Commander’ is almost all Syrah with 4% Viognier. Inky in the glass, this is sourced from their estate vineyard on Red Mountain. Stored in 50% new French oak before bottling, this shows a silky texture with loads of black fruits alongside black peppercorns, violets, and blueberry pie flavors. Delicious now, watch this evolve over the next ten years. Drink 2024-2034”— 94 Points
- 2020 – Paul Gregutt: “Sourced entirely from the Ciel du Cheval vineyard, this is a beefy, fragrant, dark and tannic Syrah. Along with cassis fruits there’s a big slice of cut tobacco, a vein of espresso and a thin layer of dried herbs. A lingering spicy note carries through the finish. Tannins slide into a slightly chalky trail out.”— 92 Points
- 2019 – Owen Bargreen: “A blend of 95% Syrah with the remainder Viognier all sourced form the Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, this unveils white flowers and apricots that combine with dense blackberry compote tones aromatically. The palate is very soft and generous with good depth and concentration, yet showing a brilliant core of acidity. Drink 2022-2032”— 93 Points
