Loire Valley Meets Washington: Estate Cabernet Franc
Our Estate Cabernet Franc draws inspiration from the iconic reds of the Loire Valley, particularly the Chinon wines, which are known for their elegance and complexity. Bottled in a Rhône-style bottle, which is uncommon for this varietal, our Cabernet Franc captures the essence of its French inspiration while embracing the unique characteristics of Washington’s terroir.
The Winemaking Process
We utilize whole berry fermentation, de-stemming the grapes and placing them intact in our fermentation vessel. This method, combined with our exclusive use of 100% concrete fermentation, enhances the wine’s natural attributes and allows the Red Mountain influence to shine through. Following fermentation, we employ extended maceration, allowing the juice to rest on its skins for 32 days. This process not only lightens the color but also intensifies flavor and tannin structure, producing a wine that is both complex and well balanced.
The Vineyard
Angela’s Estate Vineyard is one of our three estate vineyards, situated at the southwestern edge of the Red Mountain AVA. Our Cabernet Franc thrives on the North-facing slope, where the high alkalinity and calcium carbonate content of the soil support robust root development. This granular soil allows the vines to tap deep into the earth for essential nutrients and moisture, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality.
Tasting Notes
Our 2020 Estate Cabernet Franc opens with a welcoming and warm aroma, offering a beautifully textured palate. The flavor profile is a delightful medley of crème de Violette, coffee grounds, and dark currants, balanced by a remarkable tannin structure. The finish is long and lingering, making it a brilliant choice to enjoy now, as its depth and intricacies shine through.
Pairing Options
Our Estate Cabernet Franc pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, echoing its Loire Valley roots. Consider enjoying it with:
- Herb-crusted lamb or beef dishes, which complement its earthy notes.
- Grilled vegetables or ratatouille, enhancing the wine’s fresh fruit character.
- Rich cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese, which balance its tannin structure.
Reviews and Accolades
Some recent notable accolades for our Estate Cabernet Franc include:
- 2020 – Owen Bargreen: “The Angela’s Vineyard is located at the southwestern corner of Red Mountain. This is beautifully textured stuff that shows fantastic flavor range. Crème de Violette, coffee grounds, and dark currants all parade with copious minerals on the palate. Finishing long, this is brilliant stuff to enjoy now. Drink 2023-2029.”—93 Points
- 2019 – Vinous: “You won’t typically see Cabernet Franc in a Rhône-style bottle, but as long as the Cabernet Franc Estate continues to deliver this quality, there’s no need to change a thing. The 2019 edition offers soft tannins lining a bright core of red fruits alongside milk chocolate and red bell pepper underpinnings on the palate. With plenty of freshness and stuffing, this has at least another 10 years in front of it”—93 Points
