The Goldilocks of Syrah: Ceidleigh Syrah
When it comes to crafting a truly exceptional Syrah, it’s not just about the grape—it’s about the story, the place, and the people behind it. Our Ceidleigh Syrah (pronounced “Kay-Lee”) embodies all these elements with a remarkable blend of tradition and innovation, making it one of our most celebrated wines.
The Story Behind Ceidleigh
Ceidleigh isn’t just a name—it’s a tribute to an unforgettable experience. During a trip to Australia’s renowned wine regions, ‘Big Papa’ Daniel Ferrelli, Kevin Taylor, and winemaker Chris Upchurch encountered a server named Ceidleigh. Her name tag caught Big Papa’s attention because of its unusual spelling, and he immediately asked how to pronounce it. When she explained that it meant “celebration” in Gaelic, the meaning resonated deeply with him. This encounter, marked by her warmth and hospitality, would leave a lasting impression.
Fast forward to the creation of one of EFESTĒ’s cherished Syrahs, and “Ceidleigh” felt like the perfect name. It was a fitting tribute to both the spirit of the word and the unforgettable experience that inspired it. The wine itself, much like a traditional Scottish or Irish gathering that shares its name, brings people together, celebrating life, joy, and good company.
Why We Love Ceidleigh Syrah
Among our lineup of 100% Syrahs, Ceidleigh stands out as the “Goldilocks” Syrah—just right in every aspect. It strikes a perfect balance between ripe red bramble fruit, intriguing earthy notes, and a rich, full body. Whether you’re firing up the grill or simply relaxing at home during a quiet evening, Ceidleigh is the ideal companion.
The Winemaking Process
Ceidleigh is a product of meticulous craftsmanship. Fermented in 100% stainless steel with a touch of whole cluster inclusion, it highlights the distinct character of our Red Mountain vineyard while adding complexity to our portfolio of Syrahs. This winemaking method not only preserves the purity of the fruit but also enhances the wine’s intricate flavors.
Tasting Notes
From the first pour, the 2020 Ceidleigh Syrah greets you with an inviting aroma reminiscent of freshly baked blueberry muffins, subtly intertwined with delicate floral notes. On the palate, it’s smooth and feminine, thanks to a touch of new French oak puncheons that impart a soft, velvety finish. The silky tannins are a testament to Angela’s Vineyard’s exceptional terroir, making this wine beautifully balanced and easy to drink.
Angela’s Vineyard
Angela’s Vineyard, located at the southwestern edge of Red Mountain, offers a stunning backdrop for our Syrah. Planted on a slope ranging from 650 to 600 feet in elevation, this site is known for its remarkable texture, purity of fruit, and concentration. The unique conditions here contribute significantly to the wine’s distinct character.
Reviews and Accolades
Our 2020 Ceidleigh Syrah has garnered praise from notable critics:
- International Wine Report: “The EFESTE Ceidleigh Syrah 2020 from Red Mountain’s Angela’s Vineyard is a beautifully structured wine, showcasing a dark brooding purple core with a light purple rim. Aromatically, it offers an enticing mix of blackberry purée, dried violets, red and black currants, and cedary herbs, all wrapped in a delicate touch of sweet vanilla bean. On the palate, the wine delivers elevated acidity, crunchy tannins, and a lush, velvety mouthfeel that lingers on the finish.” — 93 Points
- Wine Enthusiast: “A savory perfume awaits, with blackberries and blueberries joined at the hip with thyme, wet slate, and roasted pork shoulder aromas. Black cherries hold court on the palate, along with black coffee, saline, and a trace of blackstrap molasses. A bit grippy at the moment, the Ceidleigh would be best decanted or held for another decade.” — 92 Points
- Owen Bargreen: “Coming from their estate vineyard on Red Mountain, this was fermented in stainless steel and underwent roughly 40% whole cluster fermentation. This comes off beautifully on the nose with brisket, green peppercorns, and black olives. The palate is soft and inviting with a plush texture. This is loaded with bright red and dark fruits alongside salty and stony undertones.” — 93 Points
Ceidleigh Syrah is versatile and food-friendly, making it a great choice for a variety of dishes. It pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, hearty stews, or even a cheese platter. Its balanced nature and rich flavors make it an excellent choice for both casual gatherings and special occasions.
